In short: Before he was half of the legendary duo Abbott and Costello, Lou Costello was a star athlete and a struggling Hollywood laborer. His journey from a Paterson, New Jersey childhood to global stardom during World War II was marked by immense professional success, personal tragedy, and a complex, shifting partnership.

Born Louis Francis Cristillo in 1906, Costello was a natural athlete who excelled in basketball and boxing before hitchhiking to Hollywood in 1927. Initially finding only work as a stuntman and extra, he eventually returned east to hone his craft in burlesque. It was there, in the mid-1930s, that he met Bud Abbott. Their chemistry was immediate, and by 1938, their signature routine, "Who's on First?," had launched them into the national spotlight via radio.

The duo’s rise was meteoric. During World War II, they were among the highest-paid entertainers globally, famously selling $85 million in war bonds in just 35 days in 1942. Yet, their off-screen relationship was often fraught. In 1943, Costello suffered a devastating personal blow when his infant son, Lou Jr., drowned in the family pool. Despite the tragedy, Costello famously chose to proceed with his radio broadcast that night, embodying the "show must go on" ethos, though colleagues noted a permanent shift in his demeanor afterward.

By the 1950s, the pair faced waning popularity, tax troubles, and the rise of new stars like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Their partnership officially dissolved in 1957. Costello continued to work as a solo performer, appearing on television and in film until his death from a heart attack in 1959 at age 52. Today, his legacy persists through the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Recreation Center in Los Angeles and a permanent exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame, which honors the enduring cultural impact of his most iconic routine.
