In short: Born into a circus family, Bud Abbott rose from burlesque box offices to become one of the world's highest-paid stars. Yet, his legendary partnership with Lou Costello was defined by deep personal friction, financial turmoil, and a tragic struggle with epilepsy that Abbott masked through alcohol abuse.

William Alexander Abbott, known as Bud, was born in 1897 to circus-working parents. His early life was defined by the transient world of burlesque, where he transitioned from a box office treasurer to a performer by necessity. In 1935, he met Lou Costello, and by 1941, their film Buck Privates had cemented their status as Hollywood icons. For over a decade, they dominated the box office, ranking in the top ten stars from 1941 through 1951, and reaching the number one spot in 1942.

Despite their professional success, the duo's relationship was marred by persistent conflict. Tensions over billing, salary splits, and personal grievances—such as a dispute over a maid—led to a permanent chill between the two. Abbott’s personal life was further complicated by epilepsy, diagnosed around 1926, which he attempted to manage through alcohol. This habit eventually impacted his performance, contributing to a disastrous 1956 Las Vegas show that signaled the end of their partnership.

Following their split in 1957 and Costello’s death in 1959, Abbott faced significant financial hardship, including a massive IRS tax dispute that forced him out of semi-retirement. Though he briefly attempted a comeback with a new partner, he ultimately felt no one could replace Costello. Abbott passed away in 1974, leaving behind a legacy as a master of timing and the straight man who Groucho Marx famously declared the greatest to ever live.
