Why winning two consecutive Oscars became the worst thing to happen to Luise Rainer
In short: Luise Rainer was the first actor to win back-to-back Academy Awards, yet she viewed this rapid success as a career-ending curse. Feeling that Hollywood demanded a level of performance she could no longer sustain, she walked away from the studio system at the height of her fame to seek quiet.
Born in 1910, Luise Rainer began her career under the tutelage of Max Reinhardt in Germany. After signing with MGM in 1935, her rise was meteoric. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and repeated the feat the following year for her portrayal of a Chinese peasant in The Good Earth (1937). She remains one of only three actresses to win two Oscars by age 30, alongside Jodie Foster and Hilary Swank.
Despite this acclaim, Rainer felt trapped by the high expectations of the studio system. She later described her two consecutive wins as the worst possible outcome for her career, noting that the pressure to constantly deliver made her feel as though her creative source had dried up. Her frustration was compounded by the death of her mentor, producer Irving Thalberg, in 1936, and a difficult marriage to playwright Clifford Odets. By 1938, she had become disillusioned with Hollywood, famously telling MGM head Louis B. Mayer that she could no longer work from the inside out.
Rainer’s departure from film was not a total retreat from public life. She engaged in humanitarian work for victims of the Spanish Civil War and briefly studied medicine in Europe, finding solace in being treated as a student rather than a star. Although she made a brief return to acting in the 1940s, she never regained her former Hollywood status. By the time of her death in 2014, just shy of her 105th birthday, she held the record as the longest-lived Oscar recipient, a testament to a life that spanned far beyond her brief, intense period of cinematic stardom.
