In short: Merv Griffin was a singer and talk show host who fundamentally changed television. By flipping the traditional quiz show format on its head, he created cultural staples that remain global icons today. Yet, his path from a radio crooner to a media mogul was marked by unexpected risks and massive business gambles.

Born in 1925, Merv Griffin began his career as a radio singer and big band performer, eventually transitioning into film and television. His early life in California included playing hangman with his sister during family trips, a childhood pastime that would later inspire his most famous creation, Wheel of Fortune. After a stint as a singer—during which he famously recorded the first U.S. album on magnetic tape—he grew dissatisfied with the film industry and pivoted toward television production.

Griffin’s most significant innovation arrived in 1964 with the launch of Jeopardy!. Inspired by his wife, Julann, who suggested a show where contestants were provided with answers and tasked with formulating the questions, the format was designed to avoid the stigma of the 1950s quiz show scandals. The show became a massive success, followed by the cultural phenomenon of Wheel of Fortune. In 1986, he sold his production company to Columbia Pictures Television for $250 million, a record-breaking deal for an individual owner at the time.

Beyond his creative success, Griffin was a prolific, if sometimes volatile, entrepreneur. He expanded into real estate and hospitality, purchasing properties like The Beverly Hilton and Resorts International in Atlantic City. His acquisition of the latter from Donald Trump in 1988 for $365 million proved disastrous, leading to a bankruptcy filing just over a year later due to heavy debt and high interest rates. Despite these financial swings, Griffin remained a titan of the industry, leaving behind a legacy of game shows that continue to air in syndication today.
