The century-long journey from subway signals to cinematic immortality
In short: Nehemiah Persoff spent 55 years as a chameleon of the screen, appearing in over 200 productions. From uncredited bit parts to iconic roles alongside Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart, his career was a masterclass in longevity, spanning from the 1940s to the turn of the millennium.
Born in Jerusalem in 1919, Persoff immigrated to the United States in 1929. His early life was defined by labor and technical training; he worked odd jobs during the Great Depression and graduated as a certified electrician in 1937. Before finding fame, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was tasked with forming an acting company to entertain soldiers. This period of service preceded his transition into the professional theater scene of New York.
Persoff's path to stardom was forged in the prestigious Actors Studio. In 1947, he joined a beginners' class taught by Elia Kazan, alongside future legends like Kim Hunter and Cloris Leachman. His early film work was a steady climb through the ranks of Hollywood. He notably appeared in the 1954 classic On the Waterfront, and later became a recognizable face in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot (1959), where he played the gangster boss Little Bonaparte. His signature role, however, was Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik in the television series The Untouchables.
Despite his success in the United States, Persoff's life was marked by complex personal ties to his heritage. A devout Zionist, he chose to remain in the U.S. He made a choice he eventually felt sorry about regarding the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He eventually married Thia Persov, a nurse who had served with the Palmach during that very conflict. Persoff moved into watercolor painting upon retiring in 2003, yet he stays famous for his role as Papa Mousekewitz and for being the eldest male Star Trek performer alive when he passed away in 2022.
