In short: Since 1954, India has honored its finest films through a rigorous national competition. These awards recognize technical and artistic mastery across diverse languages and regions. By celebrating both feature and non-feature works, the ceremony aims to foster national unity and promote the appreciation of cinema as a vital cultural art form.

The National Film Awards serve as a premier platform for acknowledging excellence within the Indian film industry. Established by the government to encourage the development of national art and culture, the ceremony honors films produced during the preceding calendar year. While the Directorate of Film Festivals managed the event from 1974 until 2022, the National Film Development Corporation of India now oversees the administration. Despite this government-linked oversight, the selection process remains independent; neither the state nor the organizing body influences the jury's final decisions regarding winners.

Eligibility is strictly governed by the National Film Award Regulations. To qualify, a film must be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification within the relevant calendar year, and its director must be an Indian national. For co-productions involving foreign entities, filmmakers must satisfy up to six specific conditions. Each year, over 100 entries are deemed eligible in both the feature and non-feature categories. The jury panels, which are appointed by the National Film Development Corporation, hold the authority to classify films and determine their suitability for competition.

The awards are divided into three primary sections: feature films, non-feature films, and writing on cinema. The first two sections focus on aesthetic and technical quality, as well as social relevance, to help bridge cultural gaps across India's regions. The writing section promotes the critical study of cinema as an art form. Winners receive a certificate of merit, a cash prize, and a medallion. Top honors are presented as the Swarna Kamal, or Golden Lotus, while other categories receive the Rajat Kamal, or Silver Lotus. Additionally, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the growth of Indian cinema.
