How a fan-owned club reclaimed its spiritual home after a thirty-year exile
In short: After the original Wimbledon F.C. relocated to Milton Keynes in 2003, supporters formed AFC Wimbledon to keep the club alive. Their ultimate goal was to return to Merton, near the site of their original Plough Lane stadium. In 2020, they finally opened a new, fan-funded stadium just 200 yards away.
The original Plough Lane stadium served as the home of Wimbledon F.C. from 1912 until 1991. Following that departure, the club spent years in a ground-share arrangement at Selhurst Park while searching for a new home. When the original club moved 70 miles north to Milton Keynes in 2003, supporters established a phoenix club, AFC Wimbledon. For eighteen years, the new club played at Kingsmeadow, but the ambition to return to their spiritual home in Merton remained a primary objective.
The path to the new stadium involved a complex development project on the site of the former Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. In 2013, AFC Wimbledon announced a joint bid with developer Galliard Homes to build a football stadium alongside 600 residential units. Financing the project required significant community effort; after traditional funding gaps emerged in 2019, supporters raised over £5 million through a bond issue, and local businessman Nick Robertson provided the final investment needed to secure construction contracts in May 2020.
The new stadium opened on 3 November 2020, though the first match against Doncaster Rovers took place behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions. Since then, the venue has evolved into a multi-purpose space, hosting rugby league matches for the London Broncos, women's football, and even American football. While the initial capacity was 9,215, the site holds planning permission to expand to 20,000 spectators. In 2024, the stadium was recognized by FourFourTwo as the 42nd best in world football, marking a successful return to the club's roots.
