In short: Pola Negri was the original continental siren, rising from poverty in Poland to become the wealthiest woman in silent film. She pioneered Hollywood's obsession with European stars, introduced enduring fashion trends like red toenails, and lived a life defined by high-stakes romance, international scandal, and a legendary, defiant spirit.

Born Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec in 1897, Negri overcame childhood tuberculosis and poverty to become a celebrated stage actress in Warsaw. Her career trajectory shifted in 1917 when she moved to Berlin, where her collaboration with director Ernst Lubitsch produced international hits like Madame Dubarry. This success broke the American embargo on German films and prompted Paramount Pictures to recruit her to Hollywood in 1922, making her the first European actress to sign a major American contract.

In the United States, Negri became a cultural phenomenon, earning $10,000 a week by 1928 and living in a mansion modeled after the White House. She was a trendsetter who popularized turbans, fur boots, and red painted toenails. However, her life was frequently marred by public scrutiny, particularly following her dramatic, highly publicized mourning at the 1926 funeral of her lover, Rudolph Valentino, and her subsequent marriage to the self-styled Prince Serge Mdivani. Critics and the press often dismissed her emotional displays as calculated publicity stunts.

Negri’s career spanned the transition from silent films to talkies, though she struggled to maintain her peak popularity as the industry evolved. Despite rumors of an affair with Adolf Hitler—which she successfully sued to disprove—and a brief return to Europe during the 1930s, she eventually settled in San Antonio, Texas. She lived there for decades, largely removed from the public eye, until her death in 1987 at age 90. Her legacy persists through her contributions to film history, including her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and her status as a foundational figure for the wave of European talent that followed her to America.
