In short: Before becoming a legendary director of musicals like The Sound of Music, Robert Wise was a versatile RKO studio hand. He rose from the shipping room to editing masterpieces like Citizen Kane, eventually applying his meticulous, reality-focused approach to a staggering variety of genres, from noir to science fiction.

Born in Indiana in 1914, Robert Wise initially pursued journalism before the Great Depression forced him to Hollywood in 1933. Starting in the RKO shipping room, he climbed the ranks to become a film editor by 1939. His early editorial work included the landmark Citizen Kane, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He also significantly reedited The Magnificent Ambersons after Orson Welles was removed from the project, even directing an additional scene himself.

Wise’s transition to directing began in 1944 when he stepped in to finish The Curse of the Cat People. He quickly established a reputation for efficiency and a commitment to realism, often relying on psychological tension rather than cheap thrills. His 1949 boxing drama, The Set-Up, remains a critical favorite, noted for its authentic atmosphere and a 72-minute runtime that mirrors the duration of the events depicted on screen. He prepared for the film by observing real fight arenas.

Throughout the 1950s, Wise proved his reliability across diverse genres, directing the influential science-fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still and the corporate drama Executive Suite. His career reached new heights in the 1960s with the massive success of West Side Story and The Sound of Music, both of which won him Academy Awards for Best Director. Despite his lack of a singular, recognizable stylistic signature, Wise was widely regarded as a master craftsman who prioritized subject knowledge and narrative clarity in every project he undertook.
