How a rejected film student became the most influential cinematographer in modern cinema history
In short: Roger Deakins was once denied entry to film school because his photography lacked a cinematic quality. He spent a year documenting rural life before eventually being accepted. Today, he is a knighted master of light, known for his technical innovations and his ability to attract major stars to projects.
Born in 1949 in Torquay, Devon, Roger Deakins initially studied graphic design at the Bath Academy of Art. His early career was defined by diverse work, including filming a yacht race, documenting conflicts in Africa, and shooting music videos for artists like Marvin Gaye and Meat Loaf. His breakthrough into dramatic features came through his collaboration with director Michael Radford, notably on the 1984 adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four. For that film, Deakins pioneered the bleach bypass technique, a process that retains silver in the print to create a stark, washed-out aesthetic that has since become a staple of visual storytelling.
Deakins is perhaps best known for his long-term partnerships with directors like the Coen brothers and Denis Villeneuve. His technical precision is legendary; for the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, he oversaw the first full-length feature to undergo complete digital color grading, transforming lush Mississippi landscapes into a distinct, burnt-yellow palette. His influence is so profound that actors like Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling have cited his involvement as a primary reason for joining specific productions, a level of industry pull typically reserved for auteur directors.
Despite his immense reputation, Academy recognition arrived slowly. Deakins received 13 nominations before finally winning his first Oscar for Blade Runner 2049 in 2017, followed by a second win for 1917 in 2019. Beyond his film work, he remains deeply engaged with the craft, hosting the Team Deakins podcast and maintaining a website where he offers technical advice to aspiring cinematographers. Knighted in 2021, he continues to balance his professional life with personal passions, including still photography and fishing in his native Devon.
