In short: Sidney George Wilson, known as #0 in Slipknot, redefined stage presence through a rotating collection of gas masks and animatronic designs. Beyond his role in the heavy metal band, he cultivated a distinct career as DJ Starscream, blending horror-inspired soundscapes with a deep-seated obsession for Transformers-inspired aesthetics.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1977, Wilson became a foundational member of Slipknot, where he insisted on the designation #0 because he felt it perfectly epitomized filth. His contributions to the band’s sound were atmospheric and aggressive, characterized by scratching, sound effects, and unsettling horror-like noises. His physical performance was equally intense; in 2008, he famously broke both his heels after leaping ten feet from the stage during a show. Following the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010, Wilson and his bandmates honored their fallen peer by reverting to the iconic red jumpsuits and masks worn during their self-titled debut era.

Wilson’s visual identity was defined by his evolving mask collection. His original choice, a customized British Civil Duty gas mask adopted in 1999, became his signature. Over the years, his designs shifted from skull-like gas masks to robot-inspired creations reflecting his love for the Transformers franchise. By 2013, he began collaborating with Ukrainian studio Bob Basset to create intricate leather pieces. His most radical departure arrived with the release of the 2019 album We Are Not Your Kind, where he debuted an animatronic death mask of his own face, shrouded in a black hood—a design that drew comparisons to slasher villains and cinematic icons.

Outside of his work with Slipknot, Wilson maintained a parallel identity as DJ Starscream, a pseudonym derived from his favorite Transformers character. He found significant success in Japan, signing with N2O Records and collaborating with artists like Hiroshi Kyono. His creative influence extended within Slipknot as well; he was instrumental in designing the masks for other members, including the astronaut helmet worn by Craig Jones and the jester mask worn by Jim Root. Despite his long tenure, his time with the band concluded on August 14, 2026, following a period of reported internal changes.
