Ryan Coogler's vampire blues film won him ownership of it after 25 years
To win Sinners, Warner Bros. accepted Ryan Coogler's unusual terms: first-dollar gross, final cut, and the film reverting to him twenty-five years after release. The 1932 Mississippi Delta vampire story then earned $371 million worldwide and a record 16 Oscar nominations, winning four, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
Jordan plays twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, First World War veterans who come home to Clarksdale after seven years working for the Chicago mob. With stolen money they buy an old sawmill and turn it into a juke joint for the local Black community. Their young cousin Sammie, a blues singer and guitarist, plays opening night against the wishes of his pastor father, and his music turns out to call up spirits from past and future. It also draws Remmick, an Irish immigrant vampire, who cannot enter unless someone invites him in.
The project surfaced in January 2024 through Coogler's company Proximity Media, and Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. bid for it. Shooting ran in New Orleans from April 14 to July 17, 2024, under the decoy title Grilled Cheese. Autumn Durald Arkapaw shot on 65 mm film with IMAX and Ultra Panavision 70 cameras, so the picture switches between two aspect ratios, and she became the first woman to film a movie on large-format IMAX. Kodak made a 65mm Ektachrome stock just for a flashback. The budget, first reported around $90 million, ended up near $100 million.
Some of the costumes had a previous life. Ruth E. Carter designed them for Marvel's Blade while it was set in a similar Prohibition-era period; when that project stalled and dropped its period setting, Marvel let her buy them. Production designer Hannah Beachler built crossed beams into the church that echo the Wakanda Forever salute, a nod to Chadwick Boseman. Coogler listed influences ranging from Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn to Stephen King's novel Salem's Lot and a Twilight Zone episode.
He also wanted the film to trace links between African American, Irish and Choctaw cultures and their music. Sammie's guitar is said to have belonged to Delta bluesman Charley Patton, whom Coogler believes was probably part Choctaw. Arkapaw's Oscar made her the first woman to win Best Cinematography, while Ludwig Göransson won for the score and Coogler for his original screenplay, which also won at the BAFTAs.
