How a former interior designer became one of India's most recognizable television stars
In short: Sidharth Shukla transitioned from a quiet career in interior design to dominating Indian screens as an actor, reality show titan, and model. His path to fame was marked by a historic international modeling win and a string of high-profile television roles that cemented his status as a cultural icon.
Born in 1980 to a civil engineer and a homemaker in Mumbai, Sidharth Shukla initially pursued a degree in interior design. His early professional life involved working at a design firm, but his athletic background—which included playing football against AC Milan’s youth team—eventually steered him toward modeling. In 2005, he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Asian to win the World's Best Model title in Turkey, triumphing over 40 international competitors.
Shukla’s acting career began in 2008, but his breakthrough arrived in 2012 with the role of Shivraj Shekhar in the long-running drama Balika Vadhu. This performance earned him widespread acclaim, including the Performer of the Year award at the Indian Television Academy. He later expanded his reach into Bollywood with a supporting role in the 2014 film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, for which he received a breakthrough performance award.
The latter part of his career was defined by his massive popularity in reality television. He won the seventh season of the stunt show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi and was declared the winner of Bigg Boss 13 in 2020. His influence was measurable; he consistently topped popularity polls, became the most discussed contestant on social media platforms during his reality runs, and was ranked as the most desirable man on television for two consecutive years.
Shukla passed away in 2021 at age 40 following a heart attack. While initial public discourse speculated about his past smoking habits, discussions also emerged regarding the potential impact of steroid use on his health. His personal trainer noted that Shukla had expressed concerns about physical side effects, such as bloating, in the months leading up to his sudden death.
