How a theater cleaner became the face of a global cinematic revolution
In short: Song Kang-ho began his career pleading for work as a theater janitor. Today, he is widely considered one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. From his humble beginnings in Busan to the red carpets of Cannes, Song has redefined the boundaries of performance in modern Korean cinema.
Born in 1967, Song Kang-ho did not follow a traditional path to stardom. After failing a university entrance exam and completing mandatory military service, he moved to Seoul at age 23 to join the Yeonwoo Theater Company. His persistence was legendary; he visited the theater four times, offering to work as a cleaner just to be near the craft. His dedication eventually earned him a spot in the troupe, where he spent years honing his skills on stage before transitioning to film in his 30s.
Song’s breakthrough came in 1997 with the crime thriller No. 3, which earned him Best New Actor awards. He soon became a fixture in the works of visionary directors like Bong Joon-ho and Kim Jee-woon. His collaboration with Bong Joon-ho, in particular, has been described as a 'great actor-director collaboration,' spanning hits from Memories of Murder to the global phenomenon Parasite. Bong has noted that Song’s strength lies in his ability to convey profound emotion through subtle physical shifts, a skill that proved vital for the wordless climax of Parasite.
Beyond his technical mastery, Song has become a cultural icon in South Korea, frequently named the country's Film Actor of the Year. He was the first Korean actor to win the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in Broker in 2022. Despite these accolades, Song maintains a grounded perspective, insisting that the true purpose of filmmaking is its interaction with the audience, rather than the awards themselves. His career continues to evolve, recently expanding into television with his debut in Uncle Samsik and a role in the second season of the American series Beef.
