How a Thai action icon became a Guinness World Record holder and a senator
In short: Sombat Metanee was a titan of Thai cinema, starring in over 2,000 films and television shows. Beyond his legendary status as an action hero who performed his own stunts, he was a National Artist, a singer, and a politician who drew inspiration from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s transition to public office.
Born in 1937, Sombat Metanee entered show business in 1960 after being scouted while looking for work. His striking physical appearance—defined by a sculpted physique and pomaded hair—quickly made him a sensation. He rose to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s, eventually becoming Thailand's top leading man following the 1970 death of fellow star Mitr Chaibancha. Sombat’s career was defined by his versatility, spanning romance, musicals, and action films where he frequently performed his own stunts.
His prolific output earned him a Guinness World Record for the most film appearances, with his own estimates exceeding 2,000 credits across film and television. In 1966, he received the prestigious Golden Doll award for best actor in The Battle of Bang Rajan, presented by King Bhumibol. As his career progressed, Sombat transitioned from heroic leads to villainous roles, notably appearing in the 2000 western Tears of the Black Tiger and the historical epic The Legend of Suriyothai.
Sombat’s life extended far beyond the screen. He was a recording artist with roughly 200 songs to his name and an author who published his autobiography in 1994. Driven by a desire to contribute to Thailand, he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration. In 2006, he was elected to the Senate of Thailand, drawing a direct parallel between his political ambitions and the career path of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Though his term was cut short by a coup, his legacy remained secure; he was named a National Artist in 2016 and remained a beloved figure until his death in 2022 at age 85.
