Sonic the Hedgehog 4 brings Amy Rose to the big screen in 2027
In short: The blue blur returns in a new adventure that draws inspiration from the 1993 video game Sonic CD. With Amy Rose joining the cast and production already wrapped, the upcoming film promises to expand the cinematic universe beyond Earth, following the high-speed legacy established by its predecessors.
Development for the fourth installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series began in December 2024, shortly before the release of the third film. Director Jeff Fowler returned to lead the project, which was officially greenlit following teasers in the previous entry. Principal photography for the film commenced on March 2, 2026, at Shinfield Studios in Berkshire, and concluded on May 15, 2026. The film is currently scheduled for a United States release on March 19, 2027, by Paramount Pictures.
The cast features a mix of returning stars and new additions. Ben Schwartz reprises his role as Sonic, alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Kristen Bell joins the ensemble as Amy Rose, an anthropomorphic hedgehog wielding a large hammer. Other returning cast members include James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and Lee Majdoub. Additionally, Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade have been cast in roles that remain undisclosed.
The narrative incorporates elements from the 1993 game Sonic CD, marking the cinematic debut of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. While writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller had considered Amy for a larger role in the third film, she was ultimately excluded to maintain focus on Shadow. Director Jeff Fowler has noted that the inclusion of these characters honors the chronology of the games, though the film's plot will not be strictly limited to the events of Sonic CD. Producers have also expressed interest in exploring settings beyond Earth in future installments, signaling a broader expansion of the franchise's scope.
