How a Japanese Arcade Giant Survived Bankruptcy to Become a Global Licensing Powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1978, SNK defined the golden age of arcades with its innovative modular Neo Geo system. Despite a dramatic collapse in 2001 and a total corporate restructuring, the company reinvented itself by pivoting from hardware manufacturing to mobile gaming, character licensing, and a return to its console roots.
Originally established as Shin Nihon Kikaku in 1978 by Eikichi Kawasaki, the company initially focused on coin-operated arcade games. By 1990, SNK revolutionized the industry with the Neo Geo Multi Video System (MVS). This modular cabinet allowed operators to swap games by simply changing a cartridge, drastically reducing costs and floor space requirements. This innovation supported legendary franchises like The King of Fighters, Metal Slug, and Samurai Shodown, which became staples of the 1990s gaming culture.
The company faced severe financial distress by the late 1990s as the market shifted toward 3D graphics and home consoles. Following the failure of the Hyper Neo Geo 64 and the Neo Geo Pocket, SNK filed for bankruptcy in 2001. In a complex transition, founder Kawasaki established Playmore Corporation, which successfully acquired the intellectual property of the original entity. This new iteration, eventually renamed SNK Playmore, spent years navigating legal battles and restructuring its business model, including a decade-long focus on pachislot machines.
A major strategic shift occurred in 2015 when the company was acquired by a joint venture linked to Leyou Technologies. This move prompted a return to core gaming, with the company dropping 'Playmore' from its name in 2016 to reclaim its original identity. Today, the firm balances its legacy through modern console releases and high-profile character licensing, including the integration of its iconic fighters into global mobile hits like Honor of Kings. Since 2022, the company has been under the ownership of a subsidiary controlled by the Saudi Arabian Misk Foundation.
