In short: Stephen Gardiner was a formidable English bishop and diplomat who survived the volatile religious upheavals of the sixteenth century. A master of canon law, he became a key advisor to Henry VIII, only to face imprisonment under Edward VI and a triumphant return as Lord Chancellor under Queen Mary I.

Born around 1483, Gardiner rose to prominence through his exceptional legal expertise. His career began in the service of Cardinal Wolsey, where he proved indispensable in navigating the complex diplomatic efforts surrounding Henry VIII's desire to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Gardiner’s intellect and dedication to the crown earned him the bishopric of Winchester in 1531. He was a staunch conservative who defended royal authority, famously authoring a treatise that argued for absolute obedience to the monarch as a divine necessity.

Despite his support for the King's authority over the Church, Gardiner remained a doctrinal traditionalist. He frequently clashed with reformers like Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell. His influence waned toward the end of Henry VIII’s life, and he was excluded from the council tasked with governing during Edward VI’s minority. Under the new regime, his vocal opposition to radical Protestant reforms led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London for several years, where he was eventually deprived of his diocese.

The accession of Mary I marked a dramatic reversal of his fortunes. Restored to his bishopric and appointed Lord Chancellor, Gardiner became a central figure in the effort to reconcile England with Rome. While he presided over the revival of heresy laws, historical accounts of his personal character remain debated; some sources suggest he was a man of humane temperament who even pardoned a musician accused of heresy. He died in 1555, leaving behind a legacy as a complex, often polarizing figure whose life mirrored the turbulent transformation of the English Church.
