In short: Known as The Master of Flow, Steve Ritchie revolutionized pinball with high-speed designs, multi-ball mechanics, and cinematic flair. From his early days at Atari to his iconic work on Star Trek and Terminator, Ritchie has shaped the industry for decades, even lending his voice to legendary video game villains.

Born in San Francisco in 1950, Steve Ritchie began his career in the 1970s after serving as an electronics technician in the Coast Guard. He joined Atari in 1974, eventually moving to Williams Electronics in 1978. His debut for Williams, Flash, introduced a revolutionary figure-8 layout and intense, escalating background sound, selling over 19,000 units. Ritchie continued to push boundaries, designing Firepower—the first electronic pinball machine with multi-ball—and Black Knight, which featured the industry's first two-level playfield and the patented Magna-Save magnet system.

Ritchie’s influence extended beyond mechanical innovation into narrative and sound. His 1986 game High Speed, inspired by a real-life police chase in his Porsche 928, was the first pinball machine to feature music, effectively revitalizing the entire market. He later pioneered the use of dot-matrix displays in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and enlisted major Hollywood talent for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Beyond design, he became a prolific voice actor, most notably providing the iconic voice of Shao Kahn in the Mortal Kombat series and naming the franchise itself.

Despite the decline of the pinball industry in the late 1990s, Ritchie remained a central figure, working with Stern Pinball and later Jersey Jack Pinball. His career has been marked by both technical ingenuity and personal resilience, including navigating Ménière's disease and a finger injury. Today, he remains a titan of the field, having designed numerous machines based on pop culture phenomena like AC/DC, Game of Thrones, and Elton John, cementing his legacy as the most successful pinball designer in history.
