A messenger from afar: the mystery of our first interstellar visitor

Karen J. Meech: The story of 'Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system · 13:32 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: In October 2017, humanity spotted something that shouldn't exist in our neighborhood. It was the first confirmed object from another star system to enter our solar system. This strange, cigar-shaped traveler challenged everything we thought we knew about how planetary systems form.

Discovered on October 19, 2017, by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope at the University of Hawaii, 1I/2017 U1 ‘Oumuamua was identified as an interstellar interloper. The name ‘Oumuamua translates from Hawaiian as "a messenger from afar arriving first." This object was unique; it was highly elongated, estimated to be about ten times as long as it was wide—an aspect ratio far exceeding any asteroid or comet observed within our own solar system to date.

The object's behavior was baffling to astronomers. While it traveled at a high speed of about 196,000 mph (315,400 km/h), it remained completely inert. Unlike typical comets that shed gas and dust as they approach the Sun, ‘Oumuamua showed no such activity. Observations revealed it was a dense, reddish, cigar-shaped body composed of rock and possibly metals, with no water or ice. Its surface color was likely caused by millions of years of irradiation from cosmic rays while it wandered the Milky Way unattached to any star.

Because it was so dry and compact, scientists believe ‘Oumuamua was likely ejected from a distant star system. Its existence provides a rare opportunity to constrain planetary formation models. Specifically, it suggests that the "real estate" where objects are hot enough to become asteroids—rather than icy comets—is a very small, gravitationally bound region around young stars. By studying this single visitor, researchers can better understand the mechanics of how planets, asteroids, and comets condense from disks of dust and gas in distant corners of the galaxy.
