The cosmic messenger that defied every rule of our solar system
In short: In 2017, a mysterious visitor from another star zipped past Earth, challenging everything we knew about space rocks. It was elongated, reddish, and behaved in ways that left scientists scrambling to categorize it. Was it a dead planet's remnant, a dry asteroid, or something else entirely?
Discovered on October 19, 2017, by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope in Hawaii, 1I/2017 U1 ‘Oumuamua became the first confirmed interstellar object to enter our solar system. Its name, which translates to "a messenger from afar arriving first" in Hawaiian, reflects its unique status as a cosmic vagabond. Data indicates that this peculiar body spent several hundred million years drifting solo across the Milky Way prior to meeting our Sun briefly.
The object's physical characteristics were startling. It is described as a rocky, cigar-shaped body up to 400 meters long and roughly ten times as long as it is wide. This aspect ratio is significantly higher than any asteroid or comet found within our own solar system, where objects typically resemble chunky boulders. Furthermore, ‘Oumuamua exhibited a reddish hue—likely caused by cosmic ray irradiation over eons—and was notably inert, showing no signs of the dust or gas tails usually shed by comets as they warm up.
Despite its comet-like acceleration after passing the Sun at 196,000 mph on September 19, 2017, it remained dry. This lack of water or ice suggests it may have formed in a hot region near a distant star where only rock and metals could condense into stable planetesimals. By studying this single visitor, researchers like those at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center are now attempting to constrain models of how planetary systems form across the galaxy.
