How a post-apocalyptic Manhattan became the latest stage for a long-running television franchise
In short: The Walking Dead: Dead City transports iconic survivors Maggie and Negan into a crumbling, isolated Manhattan. Cut off from the mainland, the city has evolved into a dangerous, chaotic world of its own. This sequel series explores the desperate search for a kidnapped son amidst a landscape of terror.
The Walking Dead: Dead City, the fifth series in the franchise, marks the first direct sequel to the original show. Created by Eli Jorné, the series follows Maggie Greene, the leader of the Bricks community, and Negan, the reformed former leader of the Saviors. Their journey into Manhattan is driven by the kidnapping of Maggie’s son, Hershel, by a sadistic figure known as the Croat. The Croat, a former member of the Saviors, now leads the Burazi, a hostile group that has seized control of the island.
Development began in March 2022 under the working title Isle of the Dead, with the name change to Dead City occurring in August of that year. Principal photography took place in New Jersey between July and October 2022. The show’s narrative structure has expanded significantly since its 2023 premiere. While the first season consisted of six episodes, the second season, which premiered in May 2025, grew to eight episodes. The series was subsequently renewed for an eight-episode third season, which premiered in July 2026.
The production has seen shifts in leadership, with Seth Hoffman taking over as showrunner for the third season, replacing Jorné. The cast features a mix of returning characters and new figures, such as the New Babylon Federation marshals Perlie Armstrong and Lucia Narvaez, who are tasked with hunting Negan. The series also incorporates complex character dynamics, including the presence of the mysterious Dama and various survivor factions like the Tribespeople, the Silk Stockings, and the Foragers, all navigating a city defined by its isolation and the constant threat of the dead.
