In short: Before becoming a luxury fashion icon, Thom Browne spent years pursuing acting roles in Los Angeles. He even had to add a letter to his birth name because his original identity was already taken by another performer in the Screen Actors Guild before he eventually moved to New York City.

Thom Browne's path to high fashion was non-linear. Born in 1965 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he spent the 1990s pursuing an acting career in Los Angeles. To distinguish himself from a fellow Screen Actors Guild member, he appended an 'H' to his given name, Tom, creating a new professional moniker.

After moving to New York City in 1997, Browne transitioned into the fashion industry, working as a salesman for Armani and later leading creative development for Club Monaco under the mentorship of Ralph Lauren. He launched his eponymous brand in 2001, initially focusing on made-to-measure suits in New York's West Village. His signature aesthetic—characterized by shrunken proportions, a closer fit to the body, and the use of "medium gray" Super 120's wool twill—reimagined the traditional suit as a subversive fashion statement.

Browne's influence expanded rapidly through high-profile collaborations and strategic business moves. He partnered with Brooks Brothers in 2006 to create the "Black Fleece" collection and designed for Moncler in 2008. In 2018, the Italian company Zegna purchased an 85 percent stake in his brand for $500 million, a move intended to capture a younger demographic. Despite his commercial success, Browne maintains a strict aesthetic code, often exploring the duality of the "uniform" and blending classic menswear with avant-garde elements.

Born on 27 September 1965, Thom Browne incorporated an 'H' into his original name, Tom, as the former was already claimed by a different performer in the Screen Actors Guild.

Relocating to New York City during 1997, he established his own bespoke tailoring firm in 2001.

A $500 million acquisition of an 85 per cent stake in the label occurred in August 2018 by Zegna.
