In short: Thomas James Kenny, a Syracuse-born performer who started his career in stand-up comedy, has defined the sound of modern animation. From his iconic role as SpongeBob SquarePants to his work in Adventure Time and the Spyro video game series, Kenny has mastered the art of bringing animated characters to life.

Born in 1962, Tom Kenny began his entertainment journey in the 1970s, performing stand-up alongside lifelong friend Bobcat Goldthwait. After years of touring the national comedy circuit, Kenny transitioned into television, appearing in sketch shows like The Edge and Mr. Show. His breakthrough in voice acting arrived through his collaboration with animator Joe Murray on Rocko's Modern Life, where his ability to add depth and writing to his roles caught the attention of industry peers.

In 1997, marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg approached Kenny to voice the lead in his new ocean-themed project, SpongeBob SquarePants. Kenny described the character’s voice as a unique blend of a child and an adult, drawing inspiration from the comedic styles of Stan Laurel and Jerry Lewis. Since the show's 1999 debut, Kenny has voiced the titular character across multiple films and television specials, earning Daytime Emmy Awards in 2018 and 2020 for his performance.

Beyond SpongeBob, Kenny’s career is marked by an extensive range of roles, including the Ice King in Adventure Time, Starscream in Transformers: Animated, and the title character in the Spyro video game series. His versatility extends to live-action motion capture, notably during the 2024 Super Bowl Nickelodeon broadcast and the 2024 Kids Choice Awards, where he and co-star Bill Fagerbakke improvised as SpongeBob and Patrick in real-time. Today, Kenny remains a prolific force in animation, continuing to voice iconic characters while maintaining his roots in the industry.
