How a Hollywood matinee idol transformed from a swashbuckler into a serious actor
In short: In 1936, he walked into a premiere as an unknown and left a star. But for Tyrone Power, the glitz of Hollywood's golden age was often a gilded cage, as he struggled to balance his legendary romantic image with a deep, restless hunger for dramatic truth.
Tyrone Power III was the quintessential Hollywood leading man of the 1930s and 40s, known for his striking looks and mastery of the swashbuckler genre. His breakout role in 1936's 'Lloyd's of London'—secured after producers decided he had superior screen presence to Don Ameche—instantly catapulted him to stardom. By 1939, he was the second-largest box-office draw in America, surpassed only by Mickey Rooney.
Despite his fame in action-oriented films like 'The Mark of Zorro' and 'Jesse James', Power harbored a profound dissatisfaction with being typecast in costume dramas. He actively sought roles that challenged his 'matinee idol' persona. This included the dark, noir-inspired 'Nightmare Alley' in 1947, a film so contrary to his charming image that studio head Darryl F. Zanuck famously refused to publicize it, fearing it would damage Power's marketability.
His career was also defined by periods of intense service and personal transition. During World War II, Power served as a Marine Corps pilot, flying cargo missions in the Pacific and participating in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Following the war, he pivoted toward the stage, finding significant critical acclaim in productions like 'Mister Roberts' and 'John Brown's Body'.
Power's life was marked by both immense professional achievement and personal complexity, including a high-profile marriage to actress Annabella and a legacy of intense studio control over his professional and private life. He died suddenly of a heart attack in Madrid, Spain, in 1958 at the age of 44.
