In short: In 1944, 20th Century Fox executives tried to block Clifton Webb from a major film role because they deemed him too effeminate. They were wrong. Not only did he land the part, but his performance launched a career that made him one of the biggest stars in America.

Clifton Webb's path to stardom was defined by a transition from ballroom dancing to Broadway leading man. By 1913, he had established himself as a versatile performer, appearing in musicals and revues ranging from Al Jolson vehicles to Cole Porter comedies. His stage career was prolific; between 1913 and 1947, he appeared in 23 Broadway shows, often introducing iconic songs by the Gershwins and Irving Berlin.

His cinematic breakthrough came late, at age 55, in Otto Preminger's film noir 'Laura' (1944). The studio head Darryl F. Zanuck initially objected to Webb, wanting a more traditional villain like Laird Cregar. However, Preminger insisted on Webb to surprise the audience with his sophisticated, elegant persona. The gamble paid off: Webb received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and was signed to a long-term contract with Fox.

Webb became a household name in the late 1940s and early 1950s, notably starring as the snide babysitter Mr. Belvedere in 'Sitting Pretty' (1948). This role was so successful it spawned a sequel and later inspired an animated character in 'The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.' Despite his fame, Webb remained a private figure; he lived with his mother until her death in 1960 and remained a confirmed bachelor throughout his life.

His career serves as a study in the evolution of the 'sophisticated' leading man. From playing real-life efficiency experts in 'Cheaper by the Dozen' (1950) to portraying a doomed husband in 'Titanic' (1953), Webb navigated various genres while maintaining a distinct, gentle tenor and polished screen presence that defied early studio prejudices.
