In short: On November 3, 2026, Florida will hold a special election to fill the seat vacated by Marco Rubio. This contest marks the first time in state history that both major political parties have nominated women for a U.S. Senate seat, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown.

The vacancy arose after Marco Rubio, who had served as a U.S. senator from Florida since 2010, resigned in 2025 to become Secretary of State. Following his confirmation by a unanimous 99-0 Senate vote on January 20, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to the seat. Moody was sworn in the following day, and she subsequently secured the Republican nomination for the special election with minimal opposition.

On the Democratic side, the primary resulted in a significant political upset. Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council official with extensive fundraising resources, was widely expected to win the nomination. However, state representative Angie Nixon defeated him by securing 56.1% of the vote. Nixon, a progressive member of the Democratic Socialists of America, campaigned on a platform that included universal healthcare, free childcare, and a national rent freeze, while highlighting her opponent's recent arrival in the state.

The financial disparity between the Democratic primary candidates was stark. Vindman had accumulated approximately $16.3 million in campaign funds, whereas Nixon's campaign operated with about $975,000. Despite this, Nixon's victory signals a shift in the party's direction. The winner of the November 2026 election will serve the remainder of Rubio's original term, which concludes in 2028. This race is particularly notable given that Florida has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 2012, reflecting the state's recent trend toward the Republican Party.
