The midfielder who saved a Premier League giant from relegation
In short: In the high-stakes drama of English football, one goal can alter the course of history. For Everton, Abdoulay<0xC2>ary Doucouré delivered a strike on the final matchday of the 2022–23 season that prevented a historic descent into the second tier.
Abdoulaye Doucouré’s career has been defined by pivotal moments and shifting allegiances. Born in Meulan-en-Yvelines to Malian parents, the midfielder progressed through the Rennes youth system before making his Ligue 1 debut during the 2012–13 season. His journey through the European leagues saw him move to Watford in 2016, followed by a loan at Granada, and eventually a move to Everton in September 2020 for a fee believed to be around £20 million.
While his versatility earned him praise from managers like Carlo Ancelotti—who noted his ability to play as a number 10 or a defensive presence—his most significant contribution was a 1–0 victory over Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022–23 season. This goal was critical; had Everton only managed a draw, they would have been relegated to the second tier for the first time since the 1950–51 season, overtaken by Leicester City on goal difference.
Doucouré’s international career also saw significant complexity. After playing for France at the U21 level, he initially rejected approaches from the Mali FA to pursue a place in the French national team under Didier Deschamps. However, he eventually accepted a call-up, making his debut for Mali in a 1–0 loss to Tunisia on 25 March 2022. His international focus later shifted again following the death of his father and a desire to focus on his club career.
Beyond the pitch, Doucouré's life is rooted in his faith and family. A practicing Muslim, he has shared how he uses prayer to prepare for matches. Following his tenure in England, he moved to the Saudi Pro League to join Neom on a two-year deal in August 2025.
