In short: How does an Oklahoma drilling venture evolve into a multinational consulting powerhouse? AECOM’s journey involves a complex web of acquisitions, spanning from 1910 oil exploration to the massive engineering projects that shape modern cities and landscapes across 150 countries.

The lineage of AECOM begins in 1910, when J. Fred Miles established the Swiss Drilling Company in Oklahoma. Miles eventually gained control of roughly 200,000 acres, leading to the formation of the Swiss Oil Company in Lexington. By 1924, the business had transitioned into the Ashland Refining Company under the leadership of Paul Blazer. Through the mid-20th century, the company expanded into highway construction and materials, leveraging refinery byproducts to produce asphalt.

A pivotal shift occurred in 1984 when Ashland acquired the Los Angeles-based architectural firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall (DMJM). This acquisition integrated engineering and architecture, forming the basis for Ashland Technology Corporation. Following a recommendation by DMJM's president, Richard G. Newman, the division was spun off in 1990 as AECOM—an acronym for Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Management.

Since its independence, AECOM has grown through aggressive acquisitions, including URS Corporation in 2014 and Tishman Construction Corp. in 2010. While the firm has expanded its reach globally, it has also undergone strategic transformations. In recent years, the company has divested its Management Services, Power, and Civil construction divisions to focus on higher-margin professional services. As of 2023, the firm employed approximately 51,000 people and was ranked 291 on the Fortune 500 list.

The company's scale is immense; it reported revenues of US$16.1 billion for the 12-month period ending September 30, 2025. Today, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, AECOM provides diverse technical services to clients in more than 150 countries, ranging from urban planning to cybersecurity.
