From Big Brother contestant to the face of British television
In short: How does a reality TV participant transform into one of the UK's most beloved presenters? Alison Hammond's journey from a Birmingham drama workshop to hosting the Great British Bake Off is a masterclass in navigating the shifting landscape of modern broadcasting.
Alison Hammond's ascent in British media began in 2002, when she appeared on the third series of Channel 4's Big Brother. While many reality contestants struggle to find longevity, Hammond leveraged this early exposure into a prolific career spanning decades. Her early years were rooted in Birmingham, where she attended Cardinal Wiseman School and participated in drama workshops run by Central Television from age 11. Despite a lack of funds preventing her from attending formal drama school, her talent led to roles in the BBC soap opera Doctors and various television appearances.
Her career is marked by a remarkable versatility across genres. She has navigated everything from competitive cooking on Celebrity MasterChef and The Great British Bake Off to the ballroom of Strictly Come Dancing, where she partnered with Alja Marks Škorjanec in 2014. Beyond presenting, she has showcased her range as a voice actor in the animated film Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and as a stage performer in productions like The Rocky Horror Show and Jack and the Beanstalk at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
In recent years, Hammond has become a pillar of ITV's daytime programming. Since 2021, she has served as a main co-presenter for This Morning on Fridays, holidays, and bank holidays alongside Dermot O'Leary. Following the departures of Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in 2023, she and O'Leary expanded their hosting rotation. Her recent work also includes hosting the official Bridgerton podcast for Netflix and presenting the documentary series For the Love of Dogs, a role she took over in April 2024 following the death of Paul O'Grady.
