In short: Amy McGrath shattered glass ceilings in the cockpit before entering the political arena. As the first woman to fly combat missions for the Marine Corps in an F/A-18, her transition from fighter pilot to high-stakes political candidate has made her a prominent figure in Kentucky politics.

Born in 1975, McGrath’s path was shaped by an early fascination with aviation. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1997, she entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant. She achieved multiple historic feats, notably as the initial female Marine to engage in combat flight and the first woman to operate the F/A-18 during warfare. Her interest in aviation was sparked by studying World War II aircraft and visiting Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. She also played varsity sports including soccer, basketball, and baseball during her time at Notre Dame Academy.

McGrath completed 89 combat sorties against the Taliban and al-Qaeda throughout her 20-year tenure, retiring as a lieutenant colonel on June 1, 2017. Her flight experience included over 2,000 hours in the air, with deployments spanning Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, and East Asia. She also served as a political science instructor at the Naval Academy. Beyond her combat roles, she served as a liaison officer to the Department of State and the USAID. She also worked as a congressional fellow for Representative Susan Davis.

In the political sphere, McGrath has run for both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate in Kentucky. In her 2020 Senate campaign against Mitch McConnell, she demonstrated significant fundraising prowess, outraising the incumbent by more than $32 million. Despite this financial momentum, she lost the general election by nearly 20 percentage points. She has since declared her intent to run again in the 2026 Senate election, though she lost the Democratic nomination in the 2026 primary to Charles Booker. A self-described moderate Democrat, she has advocated for preserving the Affordable Care Act and improving infrastructure in eastern Kentucky. Additionally, she supports strengthening background checks for firearm sales.
