How Andrew Bogut became the first Australian to be the NBA's top draft pick
In short: Andrew Bogut transformed from a 15-year-old cut from his state team into an NBA champion and the first Australian selected first overall in the NBA draft. His career spanned elite college dominance, a record-breaking season with the Golden State Warriors, and a late-career return to revitalize the Australian NBL.
Born in Melbourne in 1984 to Croatian immigrants, Andrew Bogut’s path to basketball stardom was not linear. After being cut from the Victoria junior state team at 15, he refined his game under the guidance of Yugoslavian professional Siniša Marković. His breakthrough came at the Australian Institute of Sport, followed by a standout two-year stint at the University of Utah.
Bogut’s NBA career was defined by both elite defensive prowess and significant injury setbacks. He earned All-NBA Third Team honors in 2010 but suffered a gruesome arm injury that same year. After being traded to the Golden State Warriors in 2012, he became a defensive anchor for the team that won the 2015 NBA Finals and set a league record with 73 wins in the 2015–16 season. Despite his success, recurring injuries to his ankles, knees, and back plagued his tenure, leading to his retirement in 2020.
Beyond the court, Bogut has remained a polarizing figure. While celebrated for his contributions to Australian basketball—including his 2018 NBL MVP season with the Sydney Kings and his induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2025—he has frequently courted controversy. His social media activity has included promoting conspiracy theories like Pizzagate, criticizing pandemic-era lockdowns, and sharing images with figures associated with Croatian nationalism. Today, he continues his basketball journey as an assistant coach for the Sydney Kings.
