In short: Andy Fraser was only fifteen when he helped found the legendary rock band Free. Though he became a master of the bass, he famously claimed he only picked up the instrument because his schoolmates had already claimed the other roles. His most enduring hit was born from pure, spontaneous frustration.

Born in London in 1952, Fraser was a musical polymath who began piano lessons at five. By thirteen, he was already performing in West Indian clubs. His rapid ascent into the professional music world began after a chance introduction to blues pioneer Alexis Korner, who recommended the fifteen-year-old to John Mayall. Though his tenure with Mayall was brief, it launched a career that would define the sound of late-sixties British rock.

Fraser is best remembered for co-writing the anthem All Right Now with Free vocalist Paul Rodgers. The song was a desperate, last-minute creation, written in a dressing room in Durham after a lackluster performance left the band without a strong closer. According to drummer Simon Kirke, the entire track was composed in about ten minutes. It became a global phenomenon, eventually reaching over 3 million radio and television plays by 2006.

Beyond his work with Free, Fraser was a prolific songwriter who found success in the United States, penning hits for artists like Robert Palmer, Chaka Khan, and Joe Cocker. Despite his fame, he remained humble about his craft, often describing himself as a musician who simply did whatever was necessary to make a song work, whether that meant playing bass, piano, or tambourine. He passed away in 2015, leaving behind a legacy that spanned from the blues clubs of London to the global stage.

Throughout his life, Fraser navigated significant personal and health challenges, including a diagnosis of HIV and Kaposi's sarcoma. He remained active in music until his final years, mentoring new talent and even recording a song in support of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. His career serves as a testament to the power of musical intuition and the enduring impact of a well-crafted melody.
