How a scandalous marriage fueled a Scottish civil war
In short: In 1514, the marriage of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, to the Queen Dowager Margaret Tudor ignited a firestorm of political jealousy. His pursuit of power and personal passion would reshape the Scottish regency, trigger high treason charges, and even lead to the execution of his own kin.
The ascent of Archibald Douglas was defined by his 1er marriage to Margaret Tudor, the widow of King James IV and sister to Henry VIII. This union, finalized in 1514, deeply unsettled the Scottish nobility and intensified the struggle between pro-English and pro-French factions. The political fallout was immediate: by 1515, Margaret was stripped of her position as regent for the infant James V, replaced by the Duke of Albany.
Angus’s personal life further complicated his political standing. While married to the Queen, he entered into a relationship with the daughter of the Laird of Traquair. This affair, coupled with his seizure of Margaret’s dower income from the Newark estate, drove a wedge between the couple. Margaret eventually sought a divorce and allied with Albany to strip Angus of his influence, leading to his charge of high treason in 1522 and his exile to France.
His return to Scotland in 1524, backed by Henry VIII, saw him seize control of Edinburgh and call a parliament in 1525. However, his career was marked by extreme volatility. While he successfully led Scottish forces to victory at Ancrum Moor in 1545, he later faced defeat at Pinkie in 1547. His legacy remains one of family interest over national stability, a period of upheaval that saw his sister, Janet, Lady Glamis, burned at the stake in 1537 as part of the crown's vengeance against the Douglas clan.
