In short: In the Navy, a pin is rarely just a pin. From gold wings to the 'crab' of the EOD, these metal and embroidered devices signal specific qualifications, command history, and specialized expertise, following rigid regulations that dictate exactly where and how they are worn.

Naval insignia are divided into two primary categories: breast insignia, worn near ribbons or medals, and identification badges, typically worn at the breast pocket level. For those in the field, these decorations appear as metal pin-on devices on formal uniforms or embroidered tape strips on work uniforms. Strict regulations govern their placement; for instance, an active officer attaches insignia to the right breast, whereas a post-tour officer places it on the left, 1/4 inch beneath the pocket or flap's edge.

The distinction between gold and silver is a key indicator of rank and achievement. Generally, warfare and qualification insignia are gold for officers and silver for enlisted sailors. However, there are notable exceptions. The Naval Special Warfare, Naval Aircrew Warfare Specialist, and Parachutist wings are worn in silver by both ranks. Additionally, the SSBN Deterrent Patrol insignia is gold for both officers and enlisted sailors once they have completed twenty or more patrols, whereas those with fewer than twenty wear silver.

Specialized roles carry their own unique visual markers. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) insignia, colloquially known as the 'crab,' is unique as the only decoration awarded to all four branches of the U.S. Department of Defense. Meanwhile, aviation insignia—often called 'wings'—vary by role, including Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Officer, and even astronaut versions. Even the most modern advancements are captured: in May 2023, the Navy awarded the first Air Vehicle Pilot insignia to Warrant Officers qualified to pilot unmanned aerial vehicles.
