In short: The climactic siege of Helm's Deep in The Lord of the Rings was born from J.R.R. Tolkien's frustration with Macbeth. He despised how Shakespeare used a marching forest as a mere metaphor, so he crafted a narrative where trees truly go to war to crush an invading army.

The Battle of Helm's Deep, also known as the Battle of the Hornburg, serves as a pivotal conflict in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Two Towers. The fortress, situated in the White Mountains of Middle-earth, was based on the real-world Cheddar Gorge in England, a limestone ravine Tolkien visited on his honeymoon in 1916. The Glittering Caves of Aglarond, located behind the fortress, were similarly inspired by the cave complex he explored there.

Tolkien's depiction of the Rohirrim was influenced by the Bayeux Tapestry, with soldiers wearing chain-mail. The battle itself features a desperate defense against Saruman's forces, who breach the fortress walls using a mysterious explosive substance. Scholars have compared the heroic stand of Aragorn, Éomer, and Gimli to the ancient Roman legend of Horatius Cocles, who defended a bridge against an entire army. The conflict concludes when a forest of sentient, tree-like Huorns emerges to trap and eliminate the retreating enemy, burying their remains in a mound.

The 2002 film adaptation by Peter Jackson significantly altered the battle's composition. While the book features a diverse force of Orcs, Uruk-hai, and Dunlendings, the film focuses exclusively on 10,000 Uruk-hai. Jackson also introduced a contingent of Elven warriors to the defense, a departure from the literary source. Despite these changes, the film's depiction of the siege is widely celebrated for its technical mastery, utilizing a mix of physical models, elaborate sets, and advanced crowd simulation software to bring the spectacle to life.
