From songwriting competition winner to global pop chameleon
In short: Before she was topping charts in twenty-two countries, Bebe Rexha was a teenager competing against 700 others for a single songwriting award. Her journey from a self-taught musician to a multi-genre powerhouse involves unexpected collaborations, record-breaking country hits, and a fierce commitment to her roots.
Born Bleta Rexha in Brooklyn to Albanian parents, the singer's very name carries a linguistic connection to her heritage; in Albanian, 'bletë' means 'bee'. Her early musical foundation was built on self-taught trumpet, guitar, and piano, eventually leading her to discover her identity as a coloratura soprano during her high school choir years. Her professional trajectory was ignited when she won 'Best Teen Songwriter' at the Grammy Career Day competition, a feat achieved among 700 competitors.
Rexha's career is defined by a remarkable ability to traverse genres, earning her the moniker 'pop chameleon'. While she rose to prominence through pop and electronic collaborations with artists like David Guetta and Martin Garrix, she also achieved historic success in the country genre. Her track 'Meant to Be,' featuring Florida Georgia Line, spent fifty weeks at number one on the US Hot Country Songs chart, breaking a long-standing record.
Despite the highs of global hits like 'I'm Good (Blue),' her path has been marked by significant personal and professional shifts. She has been vocal about her mental health journey, revealing a diagnosis of bipolar disorder in 2019. Professionally, she transitioned from a long-standing deal with Warner Records to signing with the independent company Empire Distribution in early 2026, a move she described as embracing every part of herself [S1:rag:p25].
Her discography reflects a constant evolution, from her 2015 debut EP 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up' to her 2026 studio album 'Dirty Blonde'. Throughout this evolution, she has maintained a strong presence in the industry, accumulating four Grammy nominations and various accolades from the MTV VMAs and the Academy of Country Music.
