In short: For centuries, a Jewish community lived in plain sight in India, blending into local society while keeping ancient traditions secret. Known as the Bene Israel, they survived by adopting Hindu names and professions, only emerging from isolation when a traveling rabbi rediscovered their vestigial customs.

The Bene Israel, meaning 'Sons of Israel,' are considered the largest and oldest Jewish group in India. Tradition holds that 14 survivors—seven men and seven women—arrived on the Konkan coast via shipwreck more than 2,100 years ago. While some believe they are descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes who vanished after 721 BC, others suggest they fled persecution under Antiochus Epiphanes.

Settled in villages near Mumbai, the community integrated into the Indian caste system and adopted Hindu names ending in '-kar.' They became known as 'Shanivar Teli' (Saturday oil-pressers) because they were the only workers who abstained from labor on the Jewish Sabbath. Despite this assimilation, they maintained core practices like circumcision, reciting the Shema, observing dietary laws, and celebrating major festivals.

Their isolation began to break in the late 18th century. David Rahabi, a Jew from Cochin, is credited with revivifying their faith by teaching them normative Judaism. This transition was further accelerated in the early 19th century by Christian missionaries who introduced Marathi-language versions of the Hebrew Bible and by contact with Arabic-speaking Jews from Baghdad.

The community faced significant hurdles during the 20th-century migration to Israel. Because they had become physically indistinguishable from their neighbors and practiced customs influenced by Hindu beliefs, some rabbis initially questioned their eligibility for marriage within the Jewish faith. It wasn't until 1964 that the chief rabbinate officially declared them 'full Jews in every respect,' though it retained the right to vet individual marriages.
