How a sheltered teenager became one of television's most acclaimed survivors
In short: In the apocalyptic landscape of The Walking Dead, Beth Greene evolved from a sheltered girl into a symbol of hope. While some critics initially dismissed her early storylines, her transformation from a devout teenager into a resilient survivor earned her widespread acclaim and a Saturn Award nomination.
Introduced in the second-season episode "Bloodletting," Beth Greene was portrayed by Emily Kinney. Unlike most of the series' cast, Beth has no counterpart in the original comic book series. Initially depicted as a sheltered, devout Christian, her character arc underwent a massive shift following the downfall of the prison. She transitioned from a soft-spoken teenager into a self-assured survivor who used singing to boost the morale of her group. She is the daughter of Hershel Greene, a veterinarian and farmer. This character was introduced alongside her boyfriend, Jimmy, when Rick's group arrived at the family farm.
Beth's development was marked by significant trauma, including witnessing the death of her family in a barn and a suicide attempt in the episode "18 Miles Out." Her resilience and her complex relationship with survivor Daryl Dixon became central to her characterization. This bond was so impactful that television journalists frequently cited her as one of the series' finest characters, and Kinney received a Saturn Award nomination for "Best Supporting Actress on Television" in 2015. She eventually became a caretaker for Judith following the death of Lori Grimes. Her time spent traveling alone with Daryl Dixon helped foster a mutual respect between them.
Her journey reached a violent climax in the fifth season during a hostage exchange at Grady Memorial Hospital. After attempting to escape the control of Officer Dawn Lerner, Beth was accidentally shot in the head by Dawn during a confrontation involving surgical scissors. Her death became a primary driving force for the group's narrative in the first half of that season and left a lasting legacy through various flashbacks and spin-offs. The character has appeared in various media, including a mobile game and a 2023 retelling of the show's early seasons. Additionally, several collectible items like action figures and statues have been released to commemorate her.
