How a local zoning dispute launched a career in the U.S. House of Representatives
In short: Beth Van Duyne transitioned from a dissatisfied resident challenging a city councillor to a prominent figure in Texas politics. Her trajectory through local government, federal administration, and the U.S. House of Representatives reflects the shifting landscape of suburban Texas, marked by high-stakes elections and intense ideological debates.
Born in 1970 in Albany, New York, Beth Van Duyne eventually settled in Irving, Texas. Her political career began in 2004 when she successfully challenged incumbent city councillor Herbert Gears, citing frustration over his handling of a local zoning case. She later served as mayor of Irving from 2011 to 2017, defeating Gears in both the 2011 and 2014 mayoral elections.
During her time as mayor, Van Duyne became a polarizing figure. In 2015, she supported a resolution backing a state bill to ban Sharia law following a false report about local courts. That same year, she defended the Irving Police Department after they arrested a 14-year-old student for bringing a homemade clock to school. She was later named in a defamation lawsuit regarding the incident, which was eventually dismissed.
Following her tenure as a regional administrator for the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the first Trump administration, Van Duyne won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020. Representing Texas's 24th district, she has aligned herself with Trumpism, receiving his endorsement and voting to object to Pennsylvania's electors in the 2020 presidential election. Her district was significantly altered by 2021 redistricting, which shifted boundaries to include wealthier, traditionally Republican areas, solidifying her electoral standing.
In Congress, Van Duyne has served on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and chaired the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Regulations. Her legislative record includes voting against the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 and opposing the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act in 2022. She continues to be a key player in Texas Republican politics, recently joining the 2024 Trump campaign's state leadership team.
