Why Oklahoma State’s football stadium is the only one of its kind in the Big 12
In short: Boone Pickens Stadium features a rare east-west orientation, a design choice made in 1920 to combat strong prevailing winds. This layout creates a distinct strategic advantage, forcing visiting teams to contend with intense, direct sunlight glare while the home team defends the west end zone during sunny afternoon games.
Originally known as Athletic Field when Oklahoma A&M began playing there in 1901, the site was renamed Lewis Field in 1914 to honor Lowery Laymon Lewis, a former dean and acting university president. The field moved to its current location in 1919 and received its first wooden grandstand a year later. Over the following decades, the facility underwent numerous expansions, including the addition of steel and concrete stands in 1924 and the removal of a cinder track in 1971 to bring the seating closer to the action.
The stadium was officially renamed in 2003 to honor T. Boone Pickens, an alumnus and oil entrepreneur who provided $165 million to the university. This donation—the largest single gift for athletics to an American institution of higher education at the time—funded a massive $260 million upgrade. The project included a brick exterior designed to match the campus's Georgian architecture and a connection to the Gallagher-Iba Arena. However, the expansion was not without friction; the university's Campus Master Plan and the closure of Hall of Fame Avenue sparked intense public debate and town hall meetings between university administrators and Stillwater city officials.
Beyond football, the stadium has served as a venue for diverse events, including NFL and USFL games, presidential commencement addresses, and major concerts. In April 2025, it hosted the 'Boys from Oklahoma' event, which drew over 200,000 fans to celebrate the 'red dirt' country music scene. Today, the stadium stands as a central, if occasionally controversial, pillar of the Oklahoma State University campus, maintaining its unique orientation as the oldest field in the Big 12 Conference.
