Breaking barriers: The first Black couple to reach a Dancing with the Stars finale
In short: In the high-stakes world of ballroom dance, Brandon Armstrong achieved a historic milestone that transcended mere choreography. By reaching the finale of Dancing with the Stars in 2024, he and his partner shattered a long-standing glass ceiling for Black performers on the show.
Brandon Kelly Armstrong's journey to the spotlight is defined by a complex personal history. Born in San Francisco in 1994 as a mixed-race individual of African American and Polynesian descent, he was adopted by a white military family and raised in Napa, California, within the Mormon faith. This background provided the foundation for a path that led him from competitive training under masters like Corky Ballas to serving a two-year religious mission in Arkansas and Tennessee before turning professional.
Armstrong's tenure on Dancing with the Stars is marked by both technical mastery and historical significance. After starting as a troupe member, he rose to 'pro' status in season 27. While his career included various placements—ranging from a twelfth-place finish in season 28 to an eighth-place finish in season 32—his performance in season 33 with Chandler Kinney became a watershed moment. The duo earned the first perfect score of that season and achieved the highest cumulative points, despite receiving mixed critiques from judges like Carrie Ann Inaba and Derek Hough.
The significance of their success lies in representation. Armstrong and Kinney became the first Black couple in the show's history to reach the finale, finishing in third place on November 26, 2024. Their freestyle routine was also notable for being the show's first performance to feature an ensemble cast consisting entirely of Black dancers. This milestone highlights a shift in visibility within mainstream ballroom competition, moving from individual participation to significant, high-ranking representation.
Beyond his professional accolades, Armstrong’s life reflects a blend of traditional values and modern success. He married social media manager Brylee Ivers in July 2022 following an engagement that began with a meeting on Instagram.
