How a Dublin school teacher became one of Ireland's greatest actors
In short: Before he was a mainstay of international cinema, Brendan Gleeson was educating students in North County Dublin. From the classroom to the Academy Award stage, discover the remarkable journey of a man who mastered both the English and Irish languages.
Brendan Gleeson’s path to cinematic prominence was far from conventional. Born in Dublin in 1955, the son of Pat and Frank Gleeson, he spent his early years as an avid reader and a student of drama at St Joseph's CBS. After earning a degree in English and Irish from University College Dublin, he pursued a career in education, working as a secondary school teacher of both languages at Belcamp College. He balanced this academic life with professional theatre work in Dublin until 1991, when he committed to acting full-time.
His film career began later than many, at age 34, but his impact was immediate. He gained early recognition in Ireland for his portrayal of Michael Collins in the RTÉ television film The Treaty, earning a Jacob's Award in 1992. Since then, he has navigated a diverse range of roles, from the gritty gangster Martin Cahill in 1998's The General to the complex, mentor-like figure in the critically acclaimed In Bruges (2008). His versatility extends to even more unexpected roles, such as portraying Winston Churchill in the 2009 television film Into the Storm, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award.
Gleeson's talent has been recognized by the industry's highest honors, including nominations for Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes. His recent work in The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) earned him further Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Beyond the screen, Gleeson is a skilled musician, playing the fiddle and mandolin, and remains a dedicated advocate for the Irish language.
