The life and legacy of Buzzy Peltola, a dedicated Alaskan public servant and pilot
In short: Eugene R. Buzzy Peltola Jr. was a lifelong Alaskan whose career spanned federal wildlife management, tribal leadership, and local politics. A skilled outdoorsman with deep roots in his community, his life ended in a tragic aviation accident, leaving behind a legacy of service that resonated across the state and nation.
Born in 1966 in Bethel, Alaska, Buzzy Peltola was a member of the Orutsararmiut Native Council with Yup'ik and Tlingit heritage. His father, Gene Peltola Sr., was a notable tribal leader, and the family name traces back to Finnish roots. Peltola pursued his passion for the outdoors through a degree in wildlife management from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, eventually dedicating decades to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His work included managing subsistence programs and overseeing the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge starting in 2008.
Beyond his federal career, Peltola was active in local governance, serving on the Bethel City Council after his 2011 election. He also held roles on corporate boards for the Bethel Native Corporation and its subsidiaries. In 2018, he transitioned to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he supported 227 Alaska Native tribes as the regional director for Alaska. He retired from government service in 2022 to support his wife, Mary Peltola, during her congressional campaign, while simultaneously launching a private venture, Alaska Carbon Solutions.
Peltola died in September 2023 at age 57 following a plane crash near St. Mary's, Alaska, while transporting moose meat. The National Transportation Safety Board determined the accident resulted from the aircraft being overloaded and the placement of antlers on the wings. His death prompted widespread tributes from political leaders, including President Joe Biden and various members of Congress. A memorial service in Bethel drew over 500 attendees, honoring a man remembered for his commitment to public service and his deep connection to the Alaskan landscape.
