In short: Born as a tent community in 1899, this California city is a literal portmanteau of its own geography. Straddling the international border, it functions as a vital economic partner to its Mexican neighbor, Mexicali, while maintaining a unique identity shaped by extreme desert heat and a history of agricultural transformation.

The city of Calexico, located in southern Imperial County, owes its name to a linguistic blend of California and Mexico. Its counterpart across the international border, Mexicali, mirrors this naming convention in reverse. Founded in 1899 by the Imperial Land Company, the settlement began as a collection of tents before officially incorporating in 1908. The company was instrumental in converting the surrounding arid desert into fertile land capable of supporting year-round agricultural production.

Calexico experiences a subtropical hot-desert climate, characterized by intense summer heat where temperatures frequently reach or exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. While rainfall is generally scarce, the area is subject to occasional winter showers and rare, heavy summer thunderstorms. The region's environmental volatility was highlighted in April 2010, when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake centered near Mexicali caused significant infrastructure damage, including partial building collapses and severe impacts to the city's water treatment facilities.

Today, the city serves as a critical logistics hub, connected by Union Pacific rail lines and major state routes that facilitate trucking access to key ports and transportation centers. Governance is managed through a city council and city manager structure, with five elected council members who appoint local commissions. Despite its small footprint of 8.6 square miles, the city remains a focal point for regional transit and cross-border economic activity, maintaining a population of 38,633 as of the 2020 census.
