In short: Canadian Airlines was once a global aviation giant, connecting five continents and serving more domestic destinations than any other carrier. Yet, despite its status as a founding member of the Oneworld alliance and an early internet pioneer, the company vanished into a massive merger that reshaped Canadian skies forever.

Formed in 1987 through the consolidation of Pacific Western Airlines and Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Canadian Airlines quickly established itself as a major player in the aviation industry. By 1996, the Calgary-based carrier was moving over 11.9 million passengers annually across 17 countries. It was a forward-thinking organization, notably launching the world's first airline website in April 1994, a milestone recognized in the Canadian Internet Handbook of that era.

The airline's strategy centered on transforming its Vancouver hub into a primary gateway between North America and Asia. It aggressively expanded its trans-Pacific routes and maintained the largest frequent flyer program in Canada, boasting over three million members. However, the company faced significant financial turbulence, including a major industry slump in 1991 and the devastating impact of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which severely damaged its profitable Pacific operations.

The end arrived through a complex series of takeover battles in 1999. After a failed bid by Onex Corporation—which a Quebec judge ruled illegal due to foreign ownership restrictions—Air Canada successfully acquired the airline. The merger, finalized in 2001, effectively consolidated the Canadian market, with Air Canada capturing over 90% of domestic passenger traffic. The integration led to significant workforce reductions, including 3,500 cuts in late 2000 and another 5,000 following the 9/11 attacks, marking the final chapter for a once-dominant national carrier.
