The Maine town where Stephen King’s darkest shadows come to life
In short: Beyond the familiar names of King’s bibliography lies a television anthology that reimagines a single, cursed location. Through two distinct seasons, this supernatural horror series explores the heavy secrets, telepathic neighbors, and hidden prisoners lurking within a few square miles of dense New England woodland.
Premiering on Hulu in July 2018, Castle Rock serves as an anthology-style adaptation of Stephen King's fictional Maine setting. Created by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, the series does not follow a single continuous plot but rather weaves together separate, stand-alone stories. The first season introduced viewers to Henry Matthew Deaver, a lawyer focused on death penalty cases, who returns to his hometown after being suspected of murdering his adoptive father, Reverend Matthew Deaver.
The narrative layers are dense with supernatural elements and interconnected histories. Characters like Molly Strand, a real estate agent with empathic and telepathic powers, and Jane Levy’s Jackie Torrance, a writer connected to the legendary Jack Torrance, anchor the town's lore. The show also explores the dark side of institutional power, specifically through the lens of Shawshank State Penitentiary. In the second season, the focus shifts to an enigmatic figure known as 'The Kid,' an inmate held in secret by Warden Dale Lacy for 27 years, only to be discovered inside an abandoned septic tank.
Despite its high-concept horror, the series is grounded in intense character drama and local feuds. The second season introduces a new cast, including the mentally ill nurse Annie Wilkes and the Merrill crime family, led by the dying patriarch Reginald 'Pop' Merrill. While the series was cancelled by Hulu in November 2020 after two seasons, it remains a significant expansion of the King multiverse, blending the intimate struggles of its residents with an epic, dark saga.
