In short: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a beloved companion, prized for its gentle nature and history as a royal favorite. Yet, this breed faces a severe health crisis. Decades of selective breeding have left these dogs with a legacy of painful, inherited conditions that now threaten their very existence.

The modern Cavalier is a product of 20th-century efforts to recreate the spaniels favored by King Charles II. By the 1920s, breeders sought to reverse the flat-nosed trends that had altered the original toy spaniels. However, the breed suffered a catastrophic population collapse during the Second World War. With most stock destroyed, the surviving gene pool was dangerously small, leading to a severe founder effect where inherited diseases became widespread.

The most critical issue is mitral valve disease, which affects nearly all Cavaliers eventually. This condition, where the heart valve deteriorates and causes murmurs, is the leading cause of death, with over 40% of fatalities being cardiac-related. Because the trait is polygenic, even careful breeding struggles to eliminate it, and many dogs show early-onset symptoms by age two. The breed also faces high rates of syringomyelia, a neurological disorder where a skull malformation compresses the brain, often causing chronic pain.

These health burdens have reached such extremes that in 2022, a Norwegian court prohibited the breeding of Cavaliers, ruling that the breed's inherent health issues made it impossible to produce a healthy dog under national animal welfare standards. While enthusiasts continue to work on health protocols, the prevalence of conditions like hip dysplasia, dry eye, and progressive hearing loss remains a significant concern for the breed's future.

Despite these challenges, the Cavalier remains a popular choice for its temperament. They are famously patient, social, and adaptable, making them excellent therapy dogs. However, the contrast between their affectionate, playful personality and their physical fragility serves as a stark reminder of the unintended consequences that can arise when human aesthetic preferences dictate the biological future of a species.
