How a rejected nightclub bouncer turned a firing into a Hollywood career
In short: In 1988, Chazz Palminteri was a struggling actor working as a bouncer in New York. When he refused entry to a powerful Hollywood agent he did not recognize, he was fired on the spot. That moment of unemployment forced him to write his own break, eventually creating A Bronx Tale.
Born Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri in 1952, the Bronx native spent years balancing off-Broadway roles with security work. His life changed after he barred Irving Paul 'Swifty' Lazar from a nightclub. Left without a job, Palminteri decided to write a one-man show for himself, drawing on his own childhood experiences in the Bronx. He first performed this autobiographical piece, A Bronx Tale, at Theatre West in Los Angeles in 1989, before bringing it to New York's Playhouse 91 and eventually the Walter Kerr Theatre.
The play's success caught the attention of Robert De Niro, who saw the production in 1990. This encounter sparked a partnership that brought the story to the screen in 1993. De Niro directed the film and starred as the protagonist's father, while Palminteri wrote the screenplay and played the mobster Sonny. The film became a critical and commercial success, launching Palminteri into a prolific career as a character actor, screenwriter, and playwright.
Beyond his signature work, Palminteri has built a diverse portfolio, ranging from his Academy Award-nominated performance in Bullets Over Broadway to voice acting in video games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II. He has also expanded into the culinary world, opening several Italian restaurants across New York and Baltimore. Today, he continues to engage with audiences through his podcast, The Chazz Palminteri Show, which he launched in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Palminteri's career remains deeply rooted in his personal history and his identity as a devout Roman Catholic of Sicilian descent. From his early days witnessing neighborhood violence to his rise in Hollywood, his work often explores the complex intersections of crime, loyalty, and family. Whether through his stage performances, television roles in series like Modern Family, or his recent ventures, he remains a singular figure in American entertainment.
