The 'curtain scheme' design that modernizes a sixty-year-old sniper legacy
In short: For decades, the SVD defined Russian long-range precision. Now, the Chukavin rifle is set to replace it by flipping the internal architecture of the weapon entirely. By moving structural stress to an upper chassis, engineers have unlocked a new era of modularity and lightweight materials.
The SVCh (Chukavin Sniper Rifle) represents a fundamental shift in Russian small arms engineering. While it serves the same roles as the 1960s-era SVD—engaging personnel and assets at medium ranges where intermediate cartridges fall short—it is built on the 'curtain scheme.' This design concept, pioneered by Yevgeny Dragunov in the late 1970s for the AMB-17, separates the rifle into two distinct functional zones. The upper receiver acts as a durable metal chassis that absorbs all mechanical stress during firing, while the lower elements can be constructed from lightweight polymers.
This is a significant departure from the traditional Kalashnikov layout, where primary structural elements are located in the lower part of the gun. By isolating the high-stress components—the bolt group and the hammer-forged free-floating barrel—within the upper chassis, designers can make the rifle more compact and modular. To control this output, the SVCh employs a rotary gas regulator with three settings alongside a short stroke gas piston. This architecture allows for a smaller footprint, potentially enabling users to operate without a secondary weapon in close combat, thereby increasing mobility.
The rifle entered the spotlight at Army-2017 and began limited-scale use during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It is currently being mass-produced by Kalashnikov Concern with several variants: the standard 7.62×54mmR, a 7.62×51mm NATO variant (SVCh-308), and a heavy .338 Lapua Magnum version (SVCh-8.6). The latter features an enlarged upper receiver, a 560 mm barrel, and an estimated effective range of 1,500 m.
